UX / UI / Product Design

This is a reimagination of what a digital flashlight tool could be if designed with the user at the centre. It was a highly intuitive process to discover what could be better and also more curious and intuitive to manipulate.

It took me 2 months of observation and time on Figma to make it. At the end of the page, there's a link to the pitch I made for Apple.

Dive into de story details through the Dribbble showcase!

  Why Redesign the Flashlight?

The flashlight is more than just a feature; it’s a tool for light that has been essential for human evolution since dawn. This redesign isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about enhancing functionality, improving interaction, and expanding the utility of light in our daily lives. This is not trivial.

Key insights:

OLED Darkness utilization:

The idea of using the OLED true black feature to reduce visual noise and eye strain in dark environments.

image.png

Redesigned buttons:

Introduces new physical affordances into the digital space, with colour-changing levers to indicate light levels and the ON/OFF symbol to represent control over the switch.

image.png

Interface and interaction:

Focuses on modular design with clear actions and animations, providing tactile feedback and smart sounds for an immersive experience.

image.png

Strobe functionality:

Adds a strobe feature with adjustable frequency (in Hertz) and visual cues (PPM - Pulses Per Minute) for creative uses in education, arts, and more.

SOS mode:

Incorporates an emergency SOS beacon, a siren and a direct emergency call slider to ensure quick and intentional activation during critical situations.

image.png

Emergency at daylight:

Educates users on using their phone’s reflective surface as a signalling mirror in distress situations.

Use of Red light:

For new models, a built-in, full-powered red flashlight for night navigation, preserving the human night vision — placed above the Mute Switch for ergonomic handling.

For current models, a bright red full-screen feature.

Compass integration:

Embeds a dynamic compass icon within the flashlight tool to aid navigation without leaving the control interface.

  And more!

Final Outcome:

This project transforms the flashlight into a multifunctional, intuitive tool, and sets the bar for future, next-gen digital tools, transforming how the handheld device is perceived as a human companion.
